The NEH has supported The Dictionary of American Regional English over thirty-five years with twenty-four grants totaling more than 11 million dollars. The NEH has high praise for DARE, which "aims to, and does discover, pin down, and define the enormous breadth of regional words and phrases found across our country. The tens of thousands of entries in this book are the result of more than 50 years of labor by dedicated researchers." Read the NEH's account of DARE on their page Celebrating Fifty Years.
Also among the fifty projects the NEH is honoring on its fiftieth anniversary is an effort to map, record, and preserve the Tlingit language, and to help bring it back to more active use. Supported by NEH grants, linguists have been working for thirty-five years on compiling a Tlingit dictionary, mapping the language, and introducing it into the school curriculum.
